Madrid, May 2023. Artistic expressions have historically been used as a tool for social expression, being art a form of awareness and a bridge where reality is manifested to the maximum power. Aware of this, Nick Brandt, the famed photographer, has based part of his professional career on the portrait of people and animals affected by climate change.

The well-known English photographer now arrives at TAMARA KREISLER Gallery with 'THE DAY MAY BREAK, Chapter One and Two', an exhibition that is part of PHotoESPAÑA 2023 in which he tells the story of animals and people displaced by the climate crisis in which we are immersed. This is Nick Brandt's first solo exhibition in Spain, in which he shows a series of photographs taken in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bolivia, where he portrays people and animals affected by the climate crisis. According to the artist himself, all the protagonists of his work have been photographed in natural sanctuaries where the rescued animals were found and will never again live in their wild habitat.

All the people featured in the photographs in this exhibition have been severely affected by climate change, some displaced by cyclones that destroyed their homes and others, such as farmers displaced and impoverished by severe droughts for years.

The portraits in this photographic series were taken in five sanctuaries and conservation areas, where the animals have been previously rescued from poaching areas and natural spaces (their habitat) that have been destroyed. Therefore, this exhibition is about animals that will never again be able to live in their natural environment. It is common for humans to be close to them, photographed together in the same frame at the same time. In addition, there is a common element in this work, the fog, a symbol of a natural world that, in Nick Brandt's words, "was once recognizable and now quickly fades from view".

Nick Brandt is one of the most influential and relevant photographers today. With a focus on nature, and with a strong intention of social denunciation, Brandt tells the disaster caused over the years in the animal and natural world, and how it affects people. Likewise, the acclaimed English photographer has exhibited in some of the most important cities in the art world, such as Berlin, Hamburg, New York and London.
